The snake may also represent Delia's freedom as an independent woman. What exactly is freedom? Freedom is the right to choose, the right to create oneself own identity, the right to make a mistake, the right to succeed. Without freedom, the person has no identity, just an object with no path or direction to live his or her own life. When Sykes dies, Delia becomes a widow and is free from all the physical and mental abuse that Sykes imposed on her, therefore, allowing her to create her own identity and be Delia Jones instead of Sykes" wife. She is now allowed to make her own choice about what she does, what she is going to do, and most importantly, how to live her own life instead of how Sykes wants her to live. She is now able to express her own thoughts and feelings without fearing how her ungrateful husband is going to react. .

Mrs. Turpin is proud of her hogs" cleanliness; yet, she forgets that a hog is an animal whose instincts include rolling in mud and eating slop. She insists, however, on raising them on cement and hoses them off everyday just in case they get dirty. This represents Mrs. Turpin in many ways; first, Mrs. Turpin believes that since she doesn't socialize with "trashy people," there is no way she can be trashy; however, when she criticizes people on their social class, she is being trashy and hypocritical. Second, when Mrs. Turpin has her "revelation" with God, .
