A living spirit

Do the dead have a spirit? If the living possess a soul, then why not the dead? Where do living spirits of the dead go? The poem "Spirits of the Dead" by Edgar Allen Poe attempts to tackle this very controversial matter. That the phrase "Thy soul shall find itself alone- alone of all on earth- Unknown" means we can never be fully understood or belong. Two styles used in the poem would be symbolism and irony. With "Spirits of the Dead" it is a form of isolation and separation even as Poe feels that he is alone in the Universe he still had the presence of the spirits around him that he could not converse with or be understood by.
The body, it is but the shell for the spirit, the part that cannot - and does not live forever. In the shell we have people around us to hold us and love us, a physical connection to deeper planes. We harbor the capability create an interaction and be something that others can comprehend. Most believe that there is an afterlife, some sort of continuing persistence of the individual. The spirits are being called is almost god's way of telling people and saving them a place in heaven. Whether it is Heaven and Hell or resurrection that the spirit believes in. There are over 4.1 billion people that believe in some form of religion. That something will happen when they die. But when we die no one can understand where it is we are heading. The other place and the happy in between, the white light and tunnel vision, is where the spirit goes. It is your hour, the hour that no one can bother or disturb, "thine hour of secrecy". No one can be a nuisance; it is your solitude. It becomes your undying act that continues for you and no one else. The one thing that no one will understand or be part with you is your dying moment of rebirth.
Poe carried the weight and repressed all of his loneliness almost hoping for a time when he could join the surrounding spirits. The line about the spirits that were around in life are still around in death, cannot or will not leave or speak to him.
