Rich takes it so easily, even though he knew it was bribe. More does not feel comfortable giving Rich a position in the courts, he fears that Rich will scum to bribes to easily and does want him in the court system.
             The Cardinal some falls out of favor with the King then makes More the new Lord Chancellor. The King pays More and his family a visit to celebrate More's new position. The King and More have a private conversation in the yard. Quickly the conversation turns the matter of the King's desire for a divorce. The King knows that More does not approve him getting a divorce and at first he tells More that he is entitled to his opinion. Then King does a one eighty and goes on a tirade about how the church are a bounce traders for recognizing his marriage to Katherine and the Cardinal failed in his duties to the King. As the King is leaving Cromwell speaks to Rich about getting together to have a private conversation. .
             Cromwell has heard about the expensive cup that was given to More. He offers Rich a position in the court at York if he will distort the events of the cup so it will appear that More has Taken a bribe. Rich gives into the temptation of a job in the courts. More has become very disgusted with the whole process of trying to get a divorce and resigns as Lord Chancellor. .
             The King, in an effort to get the divorce he so eagerly wants threatens gigantic fines on the church if they do not make him the Head of the Church. By being the head of the Church of England he can do what he wants. The King cannot stand that More is silent on his new marriage and has to have More voice his opinion one why or the other. Everyone who was More's friend has turned against him. .
             The King and Cromwell come up with an idea to make everyone swear an oath to the King and his new wife. More still refuses and will not say why, so he is put in jail for well over a year. By not speaking More preserves his life because the King does not want to execute someone who has not spoke poorly about the King's polices.
