The Inner Primitive Voice Within the Lord of the Flies


This is also a major turning point in the novel, the primitive inner force within the boys begin to surface. Golding describes Ralph during the fire by writing "the knowledge and the awe made him savage- (44). This could be a literary technique used by Golding to show the reader that the primitive inner force is about to become present in the novel. .
             The boys seem to be in a primitive state, which allows them to be compared to early cave men. This primitive state is more prevalent in the Hunters, or Jack's tribe. The primitive inner force seems to affect Jack and his tribe more than any of the other tribes. The obsessing over killing a pig, and the face painting for the hunts just proves this even more. Jack was giving orders and an unknown character says, "the chief has spoken- (141). This reminds readers of earlier civilizations. When Jack kills a pig, not only his vicious and cruel murder if the pig, but he also rubs ".his reeking palms. Then Jack grabbed Maurice and rubbed the stuff over his cheeks- (135). Jack's actions here are vile and disgusting and he thinks that that this situation is hilarious. This further embeds the primitive force is taking over the boys in the readers mind.
             Despite the major physical destruction that takes place within the story, there is also a problem with mental destructions that affects Simon. Simon was the only boy who could be peaceful with nature. Simon's conquest for the truth of the beast ended in his demise. While looking for the beast Simon wandered onto the Lord of the Flies. This is a pig's head on stick left by Jack for a sacrifice for the beast. In Simon's sudden insanity the pig told him "I'm part of you-(143). This caused Simon to stare harder at the pig's head until "Simon found he was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness with in-(144). Then Simon passed out in his mental disparity.
             After Simon woke up, he stumbled upon the beast.
