Jason as a Foil of Medea

Ultimately, this struggle of gender stereotypes presented in the play proposes the idea that Medea was raised in a land where civilization was absent. Jason believes that he gave Medea far more retribution for her duties and assistance in saving his life, "and I will not stress the point. Your services, so far as they went, were well enough; but in return for saving my you got far more than you gave . that you left a barbarous land to become a resident of Corinth" (33). Thus, within the play, a sense of power seems to exist for the male race, and a stereotype that men comprise more reign above women in regards to relationships, and everyday life experiences.
While Medea and Jason are intended to contrast each other on many different levels, the most interesting feature about the contrasting relationship between these characters is that, the more successful the foil becomes, the easier it is to possibly misjudge Medea - highlighting her faults and most likely to find her guilty. Therefore, the use of this apparatus, the foil, by which to judge Medea, as the play seems to want the audience to view her character, can lead to a misleading or unjust view. Suppose then, it is more useful to discover the "wrinkles" within the foil between the crucial characters of the play. For there are several similarities that both Medea and Jason share and through the identification of these may make condemning Medea more difficult, possibly relieving her of some judgment - at least to believing firmly in "rational judgments" based on difference. One way to view Medea and Jason is through their challenges with the same head-on approach. They both struggle for what they are determined to achieve. The only difference is the source in which their power is omnipotent and the association with their different capabilities. For Medea, who accesses power from a different- more of a divine or godly- source and the capability in which she acquires from this source makes her powerful.
