Babylon Revisited

"This he does so that the idea of alcohol won't get too big in my imagination." (p. 1665, The Norton Anthology of American Literature; Volume D) In Charlie's taxi ride to the house he seems to realize that the city is not the same and he only allowed himself to indulge in frivolous things while in Paris, never enjoying what was simply there. .
Babylon Revisited continues to show the reader throughout the story the reckless behavior of Charlie prior to the crash. Charlie's old friends visit him at key moments in the story. The first encounter while he is having lunch with his daughter, Honoria. His friend's Lorraine and Dunc are surprised to see him and to see him sober at that. The second encounter they meet again, the same day, between acts at the Empire; this encounter shows Charlie's desire to change is strong, and he would rather not be around some old friends. The third encounter, the most damaging to Charlie is at his Sister In-laws, Marion's house. This time it seems as thought Charlie is unable to escape his past. .
Charlie is reformed throughout the story. He no longer lingers in drink. He has new limitations for himself. He also has made a new business for himself in Prague and wants a good life for himself and Honoria. Charlie only wishes for a second chance to regain custody of Honoria.
The Legal Guardian and Sister In-law: Marion.
Marion is a woman who clearly dislikes Charlie. In the story, the reader can see that even prior to the death of her sister, Marion did not like Charlie or his lifestyle. Marion resented and continues to resent Charlie and her sister for partying and throwing money around at a time when her and her husband, Lincoln struggled to get by. She is skeptical about Charlie's visit, but seems to recognize his agenda is to regain custody of Honoria. .
Marion and Lincoln have provided Honoria with the best life possible. They have two children of their own and have found a way to make it even during the hard times.
