Weakfish, gray trout, Cynoscion regalis, take your pick. This Sciaenidae or croaker fish is a common sea trout who's geographical range exists in areas from North Carolina to Long Island. The weakfish is found in the Atlantic, Gulf, and pacific coasts of the US. These fish prefer staying in eelgrass beds in the shallow sandy bottom of Estuaries with salinity around 10. The estuaries became the spawning grounds as well as the nursing place for the young weakfish. .
The Weakfish, being a multi coloured is equipped with colours such as purple and gold. You can easily identify a weakfish from any other fish, because the weakfish has copious dark spots on it's back. It has a distinct black outline on its tongue, as well as yellow Pelvic and Anal fins. .
The weakfish have a very interesting migration pattern; they leave the Long Island vicinity and embark offshore and south to the continental shelf of Chesapeake Bay to Cape Outlook, which is north of Cape Hatteras. As the days get warmer, the weakfish moves offshore and south from Chesapeake Bay, back to the Long Island Vicinity. The Weakfish's diet consists of all sorts of creatures such as shrimp, zooplankton, crustaceans, and small fish. .
Being part of the croaker family, the Weakfish has developed a complex sensory system. This system is based on repetitive pulsations, and at 30mhz, you can detect a croaking sound created by the pulsations. I was able to affirm this idea by observing our own Weakfish from the Hudson River. After closely examining the Weakfish's movements, I noticed that all of the other fish stayed a certain distance away from it, this might be because of the fact that it was the biggest fish; however how would they know that the Weakfish meant any harm unless it communicated that message. I believe that the Weakfish was sending out these pulsations, warning all of the other fishes to stay away from it, or it would attack and most likely kill them.
