Gender, Media, and Socialization

Views Placed on Men and Women Through Media.

Day in and day out images are placed on men and women that are presented in some certain way through television, music, advertising, so on, and so forth. I will be discussing in my paper how gender is portrayed in the media using examples from the film, "Tough Guise," and from my own personal experiences with the media and gender roles.
Everyday when you turn on the television or read a magazine, you see pictures of males and/or females. The way these people are posed is sending out some sort of message. Public media provides a channel for people to communicate among each other. This communication takes on various forms. Advertising is one area in which meaning is intentionally created. Newspapers and magazines report both news and opinions. Even music is a means of communicating to a mass audience. All of these forms of communication create meaning, and one of the underlying factors present in all is gender. .

that provided images of the men acting tough or beating up a woman. In this film, the issue was raised about the idea of "social construction of masculine identities." Jackson Katz supports the idea that socialization is an ongoing, lifelong process. Along with movie clips, there are other places that show gender image creation.
From what I can see, advertising on billboards and in magazines plays a large role in creating images of genders.
