Alba was the only one that remained near Esteban Trueba and cared for him, however, Esteban Garcia took her away. This balances the pain that Esteban Trueba had on Esteban Garcia's mother. This resolves the tension that the reader's have. However, the reader heavily feels the meaning that women exercise their control without a title in the long run since they are involved in making the connection to the previous acts of Esteban Garcia early on in the book. In Transito's case, when Esteban lost Clara and was old, he still went to the whorehouse and saw Transito. Although initially shown as her honor and need of having Esteban come or financial need, at the end of the book, it was his lustful needs that force him to depend on her. Furthermore, when Alba was taken away, the only person that Esteban could turn to was Transito.
