Truth and willingness to ignore the truth

At this point in time we see the characters changing both of Oedipus and Teiresias. Oedipus starts ignoring the truth and starts believing that what he is being told is a lie; thus he starts becoming angry. Whereas the prophet uses riddles to tell Oedipus the truth, "Go inside and ponder that riddle, and if you find I've lied then call me a prophet who cannot see". This shows that Oedipus could have believed the prophet; though he didn't and instead he reacted in an irrational manner. Sophocles is trying to show that sometimes the truth can be so painful and unbelievable that it tends to change a persons attitude towards another.
Oedipus has many opportunities through which he could have realized the truth. One instance is when he was called a bastard by a drunken man "I was at a banquet and a man - he was very drunk - said I wasn't my father's son, called me a bastard". Oedipus could have investigated further into this matter but he chose to ignore the truth. This instance is circumstantial since, when he talked to king Polybos about it, he denied it. This make the reader analysis the situation more carefully, if he had said the truth then, Oedipus could have been probably been saved, and would have set a different destiny for himself. It could also be that king polybos wanted to protect Oedipus. After that incident he went to Apollo for answers; that's where he finds out the truth and fled to Corinth in order to allow the prophecy to not come true. Sophocles shows us that Oedipus is the prey of circumstance. The readers have been exposed to the dramatic irony and this affects the judgment towards Oedipus. If a person doesn't know that he has done something wrong, then he cannot be held responsible for it. Everyone, including the God's, are blaming Oedipus for all the problems.
Jarosta was also responsible for not speaking up. She had started realizing. Though she always made herself strong by trying to ignore the truth.
