The Great Gatsby - Corruption of the American Dream

East Egg is seen to be fashionable and almost elegant in nature and style compared to the West Egg, which appeared rather more crude and false.
Clear distinctions are made between Gatsby's and the Buchanans mansions, it is made clear that both are very large wealthy homes although it is the quality of each that opposes. Gatsby's house in West Egg, is fairytale like, it is seen to be fake it lacks the style and history to be genuine this may be a reflection of Gatsby himself. The Buchanans house on the other hand has all the history and luxurious style to merit Nick's opinion. .
Wasteland, a dumping ground between the two Eggs, termed "The valley of ashes", is a very empty place. This wasteland must be travelled through on all journeys to and from the Eggs.
Its seen as a very dry, desolate place where the ashes form shapes roughly resembling hill, housing and ugly gardens. Its lined down one side with a river described as "foul". This area plays an important part in relation to the themes. It represents the destruction caused by the pursuit and gain of material wealth. As it is a dumping ground for the wastes of, in respect to the characters, the rich. The dust from the ashes is often used when describing the possessions of the inhabitants of the valley, such as the wrecked ford or Wilson's suit and everything he owns except his wife. The dust shrouds their lives, dust from the more fortunate, the rich. The few inhabitants are poor and without hope in the wastes. They desperately grasp at any chance of wealth and their dreams. Mr Wilson being hesitant when questioning when Mr Gatsby's car will be up for sale shows this.
Gatsby, the main character is a very disillusioned and materialistic person. As a child he was a poor boy from a poor family. But as a man Gatsby is very rich and also has a dream- to get Daisy. Gatsby's life is very luxurious, he has " a gorgeous car" and his house is like a film set and very materialistic; he plans to achieve his Dream through his possessions.
