Psycology of money

The article I chose to read was Psychology of money by Michael Ventura. This article explains the observations of the author on a trip he took to Las Vegas. He observes people in the natural habitat of the casinos and analyzes the "psychology of gambling." He goes into detail on how we as Americans view Money and its uses, and how our impulses can affect the way we value our money. Also our dreams of winning big and our greed cloud the way we spend money and blur our concept of the consequences gambling can have. This has changed the so called "American Dream" from being free and liberated, to a sick picture of being overly prosperous and having more and more material value. Changing the way we look at ourselves as a gambling society, and becoming a sort of culture.
After looking for an article I came upon this one, deciding that this fit into the course under behaviorism mostly. Behaviorism emphasizes that the behavior is determined primarily by factors in the environment. In Las Vegas the environment is everything. From the flashy lights, over abundance of alcohol, right down to the cheesy Elvis impersonators. The environment in Las Vegas is made to seem unreal, almost dream like. Primarily their objective is to make you feel all that money you just dropped in the slots wasn't really money at all. Not only the environment outside of the casinos make you feel overly excited and comfortable but the insides even more. Inside the Casino they will give you free beverages if you spend a good amount of money. In these beverages is alcohol. Alcohol has been proven to impair judgment and lower your state of reality. Casinos in Las Vegas are a happy environment, trying to make you feel more confident and special all at once, hoping you will be more willing to keep on playing at these blind games of luck. All of the environmental factors of casinos and there surroundings make it a very interesting psychological research field.
