The introduction of eyelid surgery to Asian women is indeed an attempt to look more beautiful, or at least what is deigned to be beautiful by society. The type of surgery is for cosmetic reasons, and cosmetics can be defined as a preparation designed to beautify the body or something superficial that is used to cover a deficiency or defect. The definition states that cosmetics involve "beautifying" the body, which must mean that lacking a double eyelid would be considered ugly and inferior to the idea of possessing more attractive double eyelids. The decision to undergo eyelid surgery is a direct response to socially popular ideas about beauty, which was exemplified by Pamela Brew when she decided to undergo surgery to feel more attractive. The society she lives in is reflected by the beauty magazines she reads, showing her that she was missing something in order to be as attractive as she possibly can. Of course she feels more beautiful now because according to the society she lives in; to have double eyelids is be attractive. .
Eyelid surgery has a lot to do with race, shown by Asian women living in America who want to fit into the American culture by obtaining a Caucasian trait. As stated earlier, the definition uses the words "deficiency" and "defect." One can't help but assume that lacking a double eyelid was considered to be a defect, suggesting that if you possessed this dominantly Asian trait, you were considered to be born with a defect which could only be fixed by undergoing the eyelid surgery. Looking at it from a broader perspective, it suggests that in terms of beauty Asians cannot be as beautiful as Caucasians unless they have the same traits.
