The killing of Luyen Phan Nguyen


Luyen was a perceived as a foreigner because he did not look like they did. The young men ages ranged between eighteen to twenty-two years old. Several of the young men had minor criminal records. Some of the young men had even served time in prison. They had already established a track record of getting drunk and picking fights at parties with who ever they disliked. They were inconsiderate of others beliefs, opinions and had a strong dislike for foreigners. They were all high school dropouts. The young men had no desire to better themselves in pursuit of the American Dream. To them the American Dream was something that they felt was their birthright. The young men and Luyen were destined to clash with each other at the party that night. When they saw Luyen, they were immediately jealous. They felt he was stealing their piece of the American Dream.
             The young men considered anyone that did not look like them to be a foreigner. Luyen being of Vietnamese decent definitely did not look like. They were all White Anglo Saxon and Luyen easily fit into their category of foreigner. Another major difference between them was that Luyen was well educated and actively pursuing his doctorate and the young men were uneducated high school dropouts. Luyen came to the party well dressed and definitely stood out from the crowd. There was an immediate jealously between some of the young men and Luyen based just on the perceived differences. In addition, the young men were perceived as being native born, Luyen was not. Luyen was well educated the young men, were not. Luyen was well dressed the young men, were not. Therefore, it was no big surprise when the young men became jealous of Luyen based upon his physical appearance and clashed with him directly.
