After this out burst, Barnaby decided to work extra hours and pay back his debts, but on the way to his debt free clean slate Mrs. Glynn accused him of stealing her money. Even though no evidence or witnesses, Mrs. Glynn indicted that Barnaby stole the money because of his criminal past. At first the accusation puzzled Barnaby. He said, " What have I ever done to her? Why would she just up and decide it was me?" (170). Then he came to realize that Sophia had told her aunt, Mrs. Glynn, about his past. Barnaby reassured himself that he had not done it. He thought to himself "Why from the first day I was hired, I had bent over backwards not to meddle in our clients' private belongings" (169). Now faced with the challenge of raising the money with out the extra hours, Barnaby slid into a feeling of depression and mistrust of others. The accusation sent Barnaby's world into a tailspin, and now when he needed Sophia's trust most, she doubted him. With the help of Martine and his clients, Barnaby climbed back on track and stayed afloat. "I had this vision of a crowd of old folks on a volleyball court, keeping me up, up, up, and not letting me fall, stepping forward one after the other to boost me over the net. When one of them had to leave, another would take that one's place. Even if the faces changed, the sea of upraised hands stayed constant" (273). In the end Barnaby reaches the light at the end of the tunnel and realizes he is some one you can trust. Faced with reliving an event from the past, Barnaby persevered and it only made him stronger.
             Edgar, an Apache boy, had his head run over by a mail truck at the age of seven. Most people assumed he was dead but he miraculously survives after being revived by Dr. Pinkley. Then after spending three months in a coma, Edgar awakes to find himself at St. Divines Hospital. There he is taken under the wing of a man named Art. Eventually Edgar regains his health but has fond he lost the ability to write with a pen.
