Evaluate the effectiveness of the ending of Mother Courage a

The end of Mother Courage and her Children is effective in the way that the audience are left to think about more than just the characters and the plot of the play. The conclusions that are drawn by the audience are a result of the techniques Brecht uses in his plays. The ending of Mother Courage sees Mother Courage pulling the wagon alone, after all her children have been killed by the war. The ending is effective in the sense that, as Brecht intended, the audience are forced into thinking about the issues surrounding the play. This is due to Brecht use of epic theatre and alienation techniques as well as the main themes running through the play, such as capitulation, war as business, virtues and religion. .
The actual meaning of the play is that, "in wartime the big profits are not made by the little people". (Brecht) this means that although Mother Courage is living off the war through her business, it is also taking from her, through the loss of her children. This means that she does not profit from the war and she also does not learn this throughout the play. The audience may be mistaken into thinking that Mother Courage will "see the light", but she does not, and continues putting her all into her business, dragging the wagon alone in the last scene. It is Brecht's aim to awaken the audience's minds, make them think for themselves about society rather than spending too much time concentrating on the characters.
Brecht developed epic theatre, as he felt that naturalistic plays were unrealistic. As a Marxist he aimed to alienate his audience whilst also attempting to change the way that people view theatre, making them think about social issue more, resulting in a possible revolt against society. Brecht has succeeded in alienating his audience in Mother Courage but did not succeed in provoking a revolt. By alienating the audience through epic theatre he made it clear to the audience that they were watching something that somebody had written.
