Comparison of Sands of Iwo Jima and Saving Private Ryan

The communication between the Germans and Americans is investigated at many points. In the opening scenes, Germans are shown surrendering to American troops, who pretend to not understand and kill them laughingly. But, compassion and rules of war are both shown when Miller's battalion lets a German soldier go, even after their medic is killed in battle.
These creators also sought to use colors and camera abilities to mimic the tone set by the actors and special effects of battle. For instance, during the battle scenes, the sky seems to be gray and grim. This is set behind an environment and a situation that is equally so. But, when Miller's company is walking through a golden field, the sky is full of color and light, to highlight the humor and camaraderie shared between these men. Although, there was still an undertone of gray and darkness which can either be used to foreshadow death and battle, or to maintain the harshness and horrible qualities of war. To summarize the overall tone of this movie, I would say that it is always realistic, whether optimistic or morose.
In The Sands of Iwo Jima, I believe that the filmmakers sought the same realism and emotional ups and downs that Saving Private Ryan created, but lacked the ability. Much like the other film, all of the soldiers come from different backgrounds and different points of view. This was highlighted by Conway's repulsion of Stryder because he reminds him of his perfectionist father. Despite this, all are forced to work together to achieve one common goal. The Sands of Iwo Jima also brings a comical and fun aspect to its plot, but completely disconnects it from the scenes of battle. The soldiers go on leave in New Zealand to meet girls and drink, which is totally unrelated to harshness and realisms of actual war. But, this movie also brings a romantic side to the war, highlighted by Allison and Conway.
Much like Saving Private Ryan, the movie tries to outline the bleakness and sorrow in battle.
