The treehouse in which the explorers reside can also be considered a colony, due to that fact that a colony has several definitions, i.e. a settlement, "possession in land", however, primarily in this case a "dwelling" (page 6, Morris). Even though Morris definition is almost a century old, I feel it still applies as it contributes in situating the explorer's, as colonialists- be that not their original intention). The idea of the tree house as a colony is reiterated in the internet article on The history of global communication. Here a colony is defined as " a settlement made by emigrants (never planed to be) from the mother country, who typically live as a class superior to the indigenous people of the colonised area" (page 1). The explorers" superiority is also visually implied by the fact that the tree house is physically higher then any other "lost civilisation" in the jungle. The interior of the dwelling also conveys this superiority, though its hydraulic elevator system, running water, balcony, laboratory, library and living room. Challenger's remake to Veronica when first entering the treehouse is (that) "finding an outpost of civilisation in the middle of this wilderness is incredible". He tree house is depicted as glamorous and Luxurious in comparison to the living standards of the "others" (in this case the Zanga and Apemen's) living conditions on the plateau (to be discussed later).
Now that the context of the story is clarified the various issues will now be unpacked in relation to the film's text and the literature analysed, firstly the context that the adventure is set in- namely one of adventure and exploration and the contexts portrayal in regard to the media.
Context.
The film is set in the early 19th century, when exploration and discovery was at the fore of colonial expansion. The perfect example of an idealised explorer, upon whom Hollywood films have been based and used to convey colonialism (anthro of media), is David Livingston.
