The city of Detroit has seen better days. The city that once thrived as the motor capital now displays neighborhoods that are utterly decrepit. As we toured the areas of Wyandotte, downtown Detroit, and Ecorse I got a full complete sense of what has happened to the city and who may be responsible for its downfall, especially in residential neighborhoods. .
As the toured the area of Wyandotte, I felt the neighborhood was rather neutral in its communal atmosphere. Residents appear to take a pride in their city and what appears to be an attempt to rebuild the city. However, as the tour entered the city of Ecorse and into the southwest Detroit area, the atmosphere drastically changed to almost a feeling of both sadness and relief; relief that I was not a resident in these areas and sadness for the people who were. These areas are drastically in need of city and/or county assistance. Garbage can literally be seen on the porches of homes and road conditions are terrible. .
The downtown Detroit area, however, appears to be on the rise corporate-style. New buildings are under construction and abandon hotels are being refurbished. But, as we traveled toward East Detroit, the neighborhoods once again became decrepit, however not as drastic as Ecorse and southwest Detroit. Although some homes in the East Detroit area appear to slightly improved, many homes are standing on residential streets almost all by themselves indicating that homes that once stood next to them were either burned or torn down. The Grosse Pointe areas appeared to be, although anywhere from literally 5 to 10 minutes away from East Detroit, are thriving and absolutely beautiful neighborhoods. .
After the tour ended, it was clear to see how much emphasis is being placed on the city's residential neighborhoods, no emphasis at all. The city's leaders are, however, making it evidently clear that downtown tourism and casinos are where the most emphasis will be placed, but the question is have they seen the garbage on top of residential porches or abandoned cars in driveways that are so full, you can barely see the houses they sit next to?.
