There are a lot of different views about the treaties that were made by the British years ago. To me personally it was just a way for the British to get the Natives to listen and trade with them so they could make more money. At the time it may have looked like the right thing to do but I do not think they expected or even cared what was to happen in the future. .
On the other hand treaties did in some ways make peace with among the people. In this treaty it is constantly saying that the Native should not in any way become hostile with the British and vise versa. But it was mostly suggested that the Natives be kind to the British, and not the other way around. So that gave the British opportunity to do what they wanted, when they wanted and not get in much trouble because it was said that it was OK to do in the treaty. .
A problem that is seen with the treaties is that they were made so long ago when the economy was a lot better. David Orton said "Treaties are seen as frozen-in-time, yet paradoxically they are guides to the assertion of contemporary land, hunting and fishing 'rights', when everything has ecologically changed for the worst." (Orton, 1997, website). So for example the Natives can argue that in the treaty it said they can fish and hunt commercially anytime without getting in trouble but with the world deteriorating this just cannot be done without doing some harm. But the treaties have already been made and there is nothing to do about it except to try and find a way to help and make things work out.
