Government scams are all too common and are even showing up in our food industry today. According to Steve Milloy (an author and scholar with the Cato Institute), the U.S.D.A is severing up some elaborate scams with food labels and the public. He is saying that the U.S.D.A has issued some strict polices between biotech and organic foods. "Foods that are grown natural or without the use of radiation, hormone injections, pesticides, and genetic engineering can only be labeled organic". The problem with this is there have been no proven cases yet today that biotech food is harmful. Steve claims that "biotech foods are less likely to contain harmful bacteria and are extensively evaluated before processing them anyway". So why is the U.S.D.A only putting their stamp of approval on organic food? According to Steve, opinion polls show one half of the public believes that organic foods are healthier and have a better impact on the environment. .
In today's society huge companies, organizations and people are spreading fear to use in their favor, alluring the public worldwide so that the organic food business booms. The Agricultural Secretary, Dan Glickman, even states that the organic label is a "marketing tool". "It's not a statement about food safety or a value judgement about nutrition or quality" says Glickman. Steve claims these same organizations and people are pushing to have biotech foods labeled. Can this be good for the biotech food industry or part of the scam? Possibly, there is more to biotech foods we just do not know about. Every time the public hears something like "bad food" increasingly more people run to buy organic. So whom do you think is pocketing the money from these lame tactics of he said she said?
