Animal Farm Analsis of Characters


            Throughout literature authors use several elements and strategies to hold interest in a reader. Some of these elements include symbolism and characterization. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses direct characterization to illustrate Tom Robinson as an oppressed, poor, black man, the actions taken against him symbolized all oppressed African Americans in the south during the 1930's. In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell uses characterization to symbolize certain figures and events of historical communist Russia, and conveys these aspects into a beast fable. .
             " Napoleon was a large, rather fierce looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire boar on the farm, not much of a talker, but with a reputation of getting his own way." (Orwell 35) According to Encarta Encyclopedia Stalin was a Georgian revolutionary which is compared to Napoleon. In fact Napoleon was the only Berkshire boar on the farm and Stalin was the only Georgian revolutionary following Marxism under Vladimir Lenin. In comparison to the quote of Napoleon, Stalin was large and fierce looking, and would strike fear into his adversaries and patrons. Though Stalin didn't speak much, when he did his words and actions would deceive his people, whom are compared to the animals, and seem beneficial at the time but would only benefit his regime. In the novel his regime was represented by the pigs.
             "Snowball was a more vivacious pig than Napoleon, quicker in speech and more inventive, but was not considered to have the same depth of character." (Orwell 35) To illustrate this, Snowball is compared to political mastermind Leon Trotsky. As stated above in the quote Snowball didn't have the same depth as Napoleon is true. The previous statement is compared to Trotsky's political ideologies. Trotsky followed Marxism but didn't agree with the most radical ideologies.
