Brooklen bridge

The New York City Skyline is flooded with amazing landmarks and works of engineering magic. People who live in this great city may go back and forth across their home without even giving these wonders a second thought. To everyone else it is a city of never ending symbols of what man can do. Where did it all begin? The Modern New York had to begin at some event. In the eyes of many it was the construction of the "Great Bridge-. The monumental scale of structural steel that had never been done before. The Brooklyn Bridge. .
The Brooklyn Bridge is considered a brilliant feat of 19th-century engineering, and was a bridge of many firsts. It was the first suspension bridge to use steel for its cable wire. It was also the first bridge to use explosives in an underwater device called a caisson. The 3,460-foot Brooklyn Bridge dominated the competition and was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It has since been beat out, but it definitely had its day. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/brooklyn.html. October 25, 2002) .

The bridge publicly opened on May the 24th, 1883, at 2:00 p.m. A grand total of 150,300 people made the journey over the bridge on opening day. For a sign of the times in which this bridge was built in, each person going across was charged one whole cent. Don't think the vehicles were left out because they hit the pavement of the newly opened bridge just three hours later at 5:00 p.m. that same day in May 1883. A total of 1,800 vehicles crossed before the close of the evening. The one cent charge was probably rough on the people, but vehicles were charged a whopping five cents to cross. Seems like 1,800 vehicles was a fairly high total for a bridge in 1883, but it is nothing compared to today's world. As of now, the Brooklyn Bridge is the second busiest bridge in New York City.
