Coping Skills for To Kill A Mockng Bird

What would it be like living in a period of time where racism was normal? What if you had to grow up in a time like this? Who would be able to show you what is right and what is wrong? In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus tries to teach is kids the correct skills in dealing with situations such as racism, prejudice, and even how to fight back with non-violence. Overall Atticus is trying to teach Scout and Jem how to cope with life's problems.
The first skill that Atticus tries to teach his kids is how to walk around in other people's skin. The reason he tells his kids to walk around in someone's skin is because sometimes it is harder to explain to them so he is basically saying put yourself in their situation and see how they would feel. When Atticus runs into Bob Ewell, Mr. Ewell spits in his face and Scout asks why he just did that. Atticus tries to explain to her by telling her to walk around in his skin and try to realize that Atticus had just made a fool of Mr. Ewell in front everyone. Another situation is for Scout to put herself in Walter Cunningham's skin to realize that he does not have as much money as others do.
Another skill that Atticus tries to teach is kids is not to harm mockingbirds. In the beginning of the book Atticus says that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because it never harms anyone and does nothing but create music for people to listen to. Mockingbirds is a synonym in a way, because it can represent people also such as Tom Robinson or even Atticus himself. Atticus tries to teach this skill to his kids because he wants to teach them that they should be nice to other people and not only think of themselves. Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in a way because all he did for Mayella were nice things such as help fix things around the house but then he is sent for jail for accusations saying that he raped Mayella. Atticus is also a mockingbird in a way because all he tries to do is help people with their problems and all he gets in return is being treaten badly such as being spit on.
