Tito, on the other hand, wanted Yugoslavia to be a federal socialist state. Mihajlovic's organization, the Chetniks, was far less active then the Communists in the fight against the Axis powers. This helped lead to a significant change in Allied policy and assistance. Mihajlovic's inactivity resulted in the Allied forces discontinuing their support for the Chetniks and strengthening alliances with Tito. .
             During the war Tito supported Yugoslavia's participation in the communist revolution. Tito and his forces sought to create a communist state system by undermining the old social-economic order. Tito's Communist military power expanded and became the National Liberation Army. The number of Tito's followers dramatically increased as he demonstrated the benefits of communism. The allied forces sided with Tito, and helped him rid the country of the old ruling order. With help from the allies Tito successfully forced the axis powers to retreat and eventually created the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
             After the war Tito became prime minister and minister of defense. He had his primary opponent, Mihajlovic, executed. This profound act was the beginning of Tito's ruthless dictatorship. Many believe Tito took part in mass murders and ethnic cleansings during this period as well. In 1953 he was named the first president of the Federal Executive Council and of Yugoslavia. Tito then began to change Yugoslavia's relationship with the Soviet Union.
             Stalin wanted to add Yugoslavia to the East European Communist bloc. This would undermine Tito's rule and result in Yugoslavia becoming a Soviet satellite. Tito did not agree with Stalin and was then expelled from the Cominform. After Stalin's death Tito improved relations with the soviets, as well as many other countries.
             Tito wanted to create a bloc of nonaligned countries. He was successful at gaining and maintaining mutual relationships with many Arab countries.
