The interior of oneself can be explored by self-reliance in the solitude of nature. Being alone helps the mind to be cleansed. nature assists the process of connecting to the senses during everyday life. Society also can provoke and infulence the evil in teh common man. thoreau's chapter of Solitude discusses the subjects of desolate living conditions, the advantage of nature, and society's influence.
" To be alone was something unpleassant"(pg92 thoreau). The message the author sends is contradicting earlier and later statements. However, Thoreau's vision of being solitary is mentally cleansing. By exploring his surroundings, the simplicity of living attaches itself to the mind and shows how his thoughts are redirected to men and the questions he asks about himself."This is the place where a wise man will dig his cellar"(pg93-94). Henry proves that lone living takes its effect on "a man thinking or working"(pg95)and therefore begins to wonder aimlessly.
The thought of a humans senses being revitalized by nature is an ideology that inspired Thoreau to become self-reliant. "This is a delicious evening, when the whole body is one sense, and imbodies delight through every pore" (pg90). The author shows and proves thatbeing in nature refreshes his mind and renews his view on Walden Pond demonstrating nature helping shape his life in teh woods to become better. " The indescribable innocence and beneficence of nature- of sun and wind and rain, of summer and winter- such health, such cheer, they afford forever! and such sympathy havethey ever with our race, that all Nature would be affected, and the sun's brightness fade, and the winds would sigh humanely, and the clouds would shed their tears, and the woods shed their leavesin midsummer, if any man should for just a momentcause grieve" (pg96-97). Thoreau uses personification in thsi quote to prove that nature uses emotion and has an affect on teh way men behave or wouldn't behave without the infulence of nature.
