Somas are the ultimate anti-depressant, a medical breakthrough meant to control humanity from feeling anything beyond euphoric and ultimately taking away the human emotion.
             Another symbol illustrating the theme is the fertilization process. When the director is lecturing the students, he explains one of the processes of creating humans in the lab. "Bokanovsky's process one egg, one embryo, one adult-normality. But a bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide. From eight, to ninety six buds, and every bud will grow into a full sized adult."" (Pg 3) The process mentioned here completely takes away the human act of giving birth. It makes the miracle of childbirth nothing more than another scientific process. Another man by the name of Foster talks to the group of students, explaining more of the Bokanovsky process. "Ninety six identical twins working ninety six identical machines!- (Pg 4) This takes away any individuality one may have, there being ninety-five others exactly like you. They are making human creation nothing more than a mechanical function that is all about numbers and less about the person. The director then asks Foster to tell the students what the record for the most number of adult individuals produced in a single ovary, in which Foster replies "Sixteen thousand and twelve in this center in one hundred and ninety batches of identicals."" (Pg 5) Science has broken through the natural barrier that limits the amount of babies that can be produced by a an ovary, and this society exploits it. They create hordes of identical people with mechanical efficiency. This all takes away from the humanistic process of pregnancy and natural childbirth, making it almost like an assembly line, which is ironic as their "lord- is the innovator in this technology, Henry Ford.
