Categorizing (Technicolor by Ruben Martinez)

Our argument lasted for about fifteen minutes because she felt she had a legit reason to put me into the Vietnamese category. And I asked her what category that she put herself into, she told me that she is an American. I asked "What characteristics does a Chinese person have?" She responded with, "Most of them have slanted eyes, jet black hair and thin lips." And I asked her, "What kind of characteristics does a Vietnamese person have?" She said, "They are skinny with small eyes and big mouth." With a high level of puzzlement of her descriptions of Chinese and Vietnamese people, I asked her, "So does that mean I am neither because I have big eyes, thick lips, light brown hair, no slanted eyes and a small mouth. She looked confused and wasn't able to answer me at all but she still stood strong that I am Vietnamese. I told her, "Fine, I"ll give you this one. I am Vietnamese. If you can describe the way Chinese and Vietnamese people look, then how does an American look?" She was not able to answer me because I know she would say that if you"re an American, you would have blonde hair and blue eyes. .
Mei-Ying was confident as how she would categorize someone before I asked her all my questions and after she answered them, it made her think. She later came and apologized to me that she didn't have the rights or a good reason to back up why she said that I am Vietnamese. .
Another categorizing confusion is the black people in the United States, why are they called African-American when most of them are just simply American? They are just like the White people in the United States but with a caramel complexion. White people all come from different countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Denmark and many more to name. All these countries and one category White. It's well known that all the people from this country look very similar to each other and yet only one category, White, whose to say that they are Americans and not English-American or Irish-American or Scottish or German-American or Italian-American or Danish-American and so on.
