Downsize This! A Breif Review

It points out specific facts, such as the tax breaks that corporations that don't need them get, to our strange attitude towards race. Moore rightly uses humor to point out all the silly things that go on in this country, not only to make you laugh but to make you think and take action.
Moore points out specifics, such as America's (or our administration's) tendancy to need an enemy. An entire chapter is devoted to "finding" our next enemy. It's humurous, partly because it's so true. Ah, let's see, the next enemy should be."Iran. Been there. Iraq. Done that.".
Another chapter, entitled "Big Welfare Mamas", outlines one of the biggest drains on society. Not our single mothers living in slums off welfare checks, but freeloading corporations. Moore uses concrete facts for people to base their own opinion on, of course he does throw his own in too. For example, social programs in place through the government amount (in 1996) to roughly $50 billion a year, that's $1.14 from each citizen. Meanwhile big corporations, who don't need it, are taking much more. For example, "It's $1.6 million in federal funds for McDonald's, in part to help them market Chicken McNuggets in Singapore from 1986 to 1994". How about a higher roller? "It's giving 278 million in government technology subsidies to Amoco, AT&T, Citicorp, Du Pont, General Electric, GM and IBM between 1990 and 1994 while together they cut 339,038 jobs and posted combined profits of $25.2 billion in 1994 alone.".
These are but a few examples that Michael Moore gives us. Each chapter deals with a slightly different issue, but they all relate to how we fare as Americans, his opinions and arguments are based solidly in facts presented throughout the book.
Chapters 25 and 26 really give an insight into Michael Moore's debate skills. They are entitled: "O.J. Is Innocent" and "O.J. Is Guilty". He points out that in a society like ours it's quite sad that good arguments can be put forth in both cases because we are a country with incredibly out of whack sensibilities, with those that should are not held accountable for their actions.
