Hirohito; Leader or Bystander

The Prime Minister agreed but was left alone to undo the actions of the military because many of the advisors who had been dispatched to relay the message were now in hiding fearing an assassination or coup de' tat. Wakatsuki ultimately failed in the attempt to carry out his emperor's wishes and the Japanese military continued on its campaign throughout China which eventually pleaded to the League of Nations for intervention who then voted 42-1 against Japan with the only vote coming from Japan supporting the action. Tensions grew between Emperor Hirohito and his generals to an extreme point where the ploy for power was in jeopardy.
Bad blood soon grew between the new Emperor and his subjects. Between 1931 and 1937 there were four coup de 'tat attempts three of which failed and one was only partially successful against Emperor Hirohito and one assassination attempt on January 8, 1932 known as the Sakuradamon Incident. Almost immediately after problems were arising in Manchuria, a coup was planned to seize total control of power in Japan. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Hashimoto, the right wing of the military plotted to assassinate the Wakatsuki cabinet with the aid of a bomb placed at the prime minister's residence. The army was then to seize control of Tokyo with a display of unification for the revolution. Problems with this plot were almost immediately evident with the leaks by Hashimoto himself who often drank to the point of belligerence. Hashimoto offered General Ugaki and War Minister General Sadao Araki leadership roles in the coup attempt but both were non-committal and Araki soon became fed up with the plot. It is argued that the threats against those who were non-committal had caused the downfall of the plot but whatever the case may be, Araki ordered the arrest of Hashimoto and any conspirators. Despite the constitution defining the actions as treason, no persons were executed and Hashimoto only spent twenty odd days in confinement.
