My Favorite Place - Lake Powell

Many truly breathtaking areas scattered throughout the western United States. All make wonderful vacation destinations and are full of fantastic sights to see. Some of the best known are Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Yosemite in California, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Another locale, equally stunning, is Lake Powell.
Lake Powell is a place of rugged, natural beauty. The lake lies in a deep sandstone canyon, nearly half the depth of the Grand Canyon, that was carved out over the course of hundreds of thousands of years by the Colorado River. The lake itself is a vast body of deep blue water straddling the border of Utah and Arizona.
Lake Powell is best experienced by boat. The entire area is truly breathtaking, especially in the summertime. The water is crystal clear, reflecting the clear blue sky above. The canyon walls are rough and jagged. They are layered in a multitude of colors, from greens and yellows to deep oranges and reds. Some of the rock formations are quite unusual, formed over thousands of years by the constant erosion of the Colorado River. A few of the walls even contain ancient Indian pictographs. There are few trees, but lots of small shrubs and bushes line the lake's banks.
Lake Powell is quite popular with tourists, but its sheer size means that there are relatively few encounters with other people. Usually, the only areas where other people can be found are at the various marinas dotting the shorelines. The lake is so very peaceful, the only sounds being the wind whistling through the canyon and the waves lapping at the sides of the boat. The waters of Lake Powell vary from location to location. Near the shores, the water is very shallow and calm, but grows a little more choppy as one goes further out. It's also rather warm in the summertime, perfect for swimming or fishing. Fish are quite abundant in Lake Powell. They are predominantly solid in color, and most are relatively small in size.
