The Techniques of the Satirist

" (433) expressing how the blatant disregard of life and the English's expensive taste would make them more apt to indulge in a delicacy because of their immoral ways; even though the food in question is defenseless children. The effect intended by the passage was to lead you to believe the English and their views were vicious as satirists tend to do to win you to their side. The proposal creates a sense of human indecency by keeping the tone of the piece practical, by assuming the voice of an economic planner; though the proposal is outrageous. His purpose in this is to show how inhumane the English were by doing nothing but prolonging Irelands economical and social problems which is a technique used commonly in a satire. The entire piece known as "A Modest proposal" is entirely made of warped logic as a satire usually is except for a passage conveying his true ideas about what should be done. Overall the piece is a well written satire which moves you with its illogical logical persuasive views on the resolution to the social unrest of the Irish nation. Another example of a satire in a completely different light is Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote".
The objective of "A Modest Proposal" was to exploit the English's wrong doing and invoke sympathy for the Irish with irony and Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote" on the other hand, was a parody written to poke fun at every aspect of the medieval romance and its heroic knights. A parody is an imitation of other literature transferred into a humorous spectrum aimed to ridicule the literary style from which it was derived. This particular form of a satire (a parody) is to take the characteristics of someone or something and make them ridiculous and that is what they did in the novel "Don Quixote". The story of Don Quixote is of a man who after reading countless books of chivalry, knighthood and romance was driven to a state of insanity in which Don believed he was knight.
