Key Cigarette Industries in China Enjoys Growth


            The total output and sales volume and economic returns of 36 state-level key cigarette industries in China grew rapidly in 2003, with the rates of growth exceeding the average level of the industry.
             The total output volume of the 36 key industries increased 6.1 percent to 1174.03 billion cigarettes (23.481 million cartons) in 2003 over the previous year, accounting for 65.6 percent of the total in the country and up 2.2 percentage points compared to the state level.
             The total sales volume of the 36 key industries increased seven percent to 1198.98 billion cigarettes (23.98 million cartons) compared to 2002. By the end of December last year, the repertory declined 6.1 percent to 22.53 billion cigarettes (451000 cartons) compared to the same period of last year.
             The total sales income of the 36 key industries increased 12.56 percent to 161.218 billion yuan in 2003 compared to the previous year. The profits and taxes increased 15.73 percent to 108.156 billion yuan, accounting for 80 percent of the total industrial profits and taxes in the country, while the profit rose 25.02 percent to 22.994 billion yuan, accounting for 89.4 percent of the total.
             The output and sales volume of famous and high-quality cigarettes increased dramatically in 2003, while the growth rate of sales volume of 11 brands exceeded 30 percent and the growth rate of sales volume in 13 provinces exceeded 20 percent.
             The total output volume of famous and high-quality cigarettes rose 9.90 percent to 9.0664 million cartons (453.32 billion cigarettes) in 2003 compared to the previous year, six percentage points higher than the average growth rate of the industry. The volume of transferred and allocated famous and high-quality cigarettes among industries rose 10.50 percent to 9.0425 million cartons (452.125 billion cigarettes), accounting for 25.47 percent of the total and up 1.44 percent compared to the proportion in 2002.
