The Crucible

Integrity: Soundness, completeness: unity. In the 1600's during the Salem Witch Trials, numerous innocent people were murdered, losing the nobility of their names and their integrity. Many confessed to the accusations of being witches or wizards and took the "easy" way out. In the play, "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, three people proved it is nobler to die with integrity rather than compromise ones principles in order to live.
"'.He would not answer aye or nay '" (1113) Giles Cory did not confess for the sake of his family. If Giles Cory did confess to witchcraft then his sons would be not have been able to inherit his land. If a Christian was condemned of witchcraft then, no one could take the land; it was to be sold. However, Giles Cory sons did inherit his land because he stood noble and kept his integrity. The court tried to literally press to get an answer out of Giles Cory. "'Great stones they lay upon his chest until he plead aye or nay.'" (1113) Giles Cory kept his integrity and the nobility of his name, his last words; "'More weight.'" (1113).
Another example is Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca Nurse was a wise and sensible. Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft by her employers the Putnam's. She was charged with the supernatural murders of Mrs. Putnam's babies. Rebecca Nurse did not plead guilty to the accusation of the murdering of Mrs. Putnam babies. Reverend Parris wanted Rebecca Nurse to hear John Proctor's confession, to get her to confess. However, Rebecca Nurse stood her ground even when John Proctor lied. "'Why, it is a lie, it is a lie: how may I damn myself? I cannot, I cannot.'" (1115) Rebecca Nurse did not let the threat of being hung scare her, she stood for what she believed for and her integrity, and nobility was not taken away from her. .
"' You will not use me. I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is of no part of salvation that you should use me.
