Critcal lens.. hero ain

Mickey Mazochi is quoted, as "A hero ain't nothing but a bum. A hero is someone that does something good for others but they are not perfect. They can be lazy and cause their own downfall. I agree with this statement. There is always a bad side to every person. Two literary pieces that agree with this quote are The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Both heroes in these plays have a point in their life that they came to their ruination because of the bum-like qualities.
John Proctor is the hero in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. He is a hero because he died so he did not have to live a lie. He stood up for the truth. As Elizabeth Proctor said, "He have his goodness now" and he truly did. He destroyed his name and himself when he was trying to prove Abigail was lying about the witchcraft. He told the court that he "have known her" as a lecher. He was a bum because he became an adulterer and that led to his ruination. Proctor gave his life for his faith and died because he would no longer live a lie.
The author shows conflict in Proctors actions. Proctor confronts man vs. himself and man vs. man conflicts. Proctor debates whether or not to tell of his horrid sin of adultery is man vs. himself conflict. He resolves this conflict by telling his sin to court to try to end the witchcraft trials. Man vs. Man is shown when Proctor battles Abigail about the lies of witchcraft. Arthur Miller also shows the literary device of irony in this play. The irony is that no one believed Proctor when he told the court the truth about being a lecher. Everyone thought John Proctor to be a good man and would have never thought that he would perform such an act. .
In the play, Oedipus Rex, the hero is Oedipus. Oedipus is a hero because he frees the city-state of Thebes from the nuisance of the Sphinx by solving her riddle. Oedipus is also heroic for being persistence to figure out what is causing the famine that had stuck Thebes twenty years after the riddle is solved though it ruins him.
