Apart from this, it is apparent that Hornby has developed a complex character through integrating gender stereotypes into one realistic personality, a technique also seen in his other novels. In How to be Good, for example, he combines the obedient wife stereotype with the working woman stereotype in order to create his protagonist.              In light of this, this critique shall use the Feminist Literary Theory. This theory, according to Carol Pajaron of the Ateneo de Manila High School English Department, compares and contrasts females in literature with common female stereotypes. In a personal note to this writer, she adds that the theory "also looks at male stereotypes but always paralleled with the female stereotype." To apply this theory, the critique will use the latter definition. The male stereotypes to be used are stereotypes resulting from feminist research regarding how men are portrayed to treat women in literature. These stereotypes will be analyzed independently and then juxtaposed with corresponding sterotypical female characters in the novel. The critique hopes to be faithful to the principle of Feminist Literary Criticism in that it will be "an academic approach to the study of literature which applies feminist thought to the analysis of literary texts and the contexts of their production and reception" (Goodman xi). .
