With many common interests, Sigrid and Matt start spending a lot of time together. On a trip out of town, Beth, John and the twins leave Sigrid alone to take care of herself. With her being a little bit lonely, she starts spending a lot of time at Matt's house looking at his paintings. Eventually they become romantically involved with each other and fall in love. With a new love in her life, Sigrid begins to forget her past problems involving Jake. .
While Beth, John and the twins are still out of town, Matt suddenly decides he needs to take a business trip. With Matt, Beth, and her family out of town, it seems as if it is the perfect for Jake to revert back into Sigrid's life. Sure enough, he does. Surprisingly he doesn't come back suddenly, but rather by leaving little clues of his presence.
First, Jake poisons Mutton, the family dog. At this time, he is Sigrid's only companion, and protection. He then poisons John, the night he came back into town. Sigrid was the first person to discover John's dead body and she notified the police. She also told them that it was her former abusive husband who had planned John's death. Instead of believing her, the police told her that John had simply overdosed on drugs, and there was no way it could have been Jake because he was out of the country. .
Sigrid, in a state of shock from finding her lover dead, returns to Beth's house and lies in wait for Jake to show his face. Knowing he will come for her, Sigrid packs her bags and leaves a note for Beth, whom is supposed to return home the following day. Not surprisingly, Jake comes. He kidnaps Sigrid and forces her to go back to their old house. After staying there for a day or so, the police come and search the house. Unable to find Jake and Sigrid, they leave. With Jake now knowing there is a warrant out for them, he goes on the run with Sigrid. .
After many close encounters of Sigrid escaping him, and also of being discovered by the police, Jake realizes that he can't keep running forever.
