First impressions


             Some subjects completed the first impression questionnaire after viewing the slide with plants and other subjects completed the first impression questionnaire after viewing the slide without living things.
             First Impressions as 4.
             The present study and the past study are related by using the same independent variables and dependent variables. The study conducted by Campbell (1979) however was conducted some time ago, approximately 33 years. Other than an age difference the present study is a smaller version of the Campbell (1979) study. I predicted that subjects who viewed the slide with living things would feel more comfortable than subjects who viewed the slide without living things, subjects who viewed the slide with living things would feel more welcome than subjects who viewed the slide without living things, subjects who viewed the slide with living things would perceive themselves to have more similar interests than subjects who viewed the slide without living things, and subjects who viewed the slide with living things would perceive themselves to feel more welcome by the professor than subjects who viewed the slide without living things. My prediction was based on the previous study conducted by Campbell (1979) whose results indicated the presence of living things had positive effects on student's ratings of feeling comfortable and welcome. Results also indicated the presence of living things led to an expectation that the professor would be similar in interests and welcome visitors.
             Method.
             Participants.
             Participants were 21 students (17 females, 4 males) from a psychology research methods course at Eastern Kentucky University. They participated as part of a class .
             assignment. Students were assigned to view either a slide of an office with living things (N=12) or a slide of an office without living things (N=9) according to the laboratory section in which they were enrolled.
