All though both poems, "Three Hundred Thousand More," and "Driving Home The Cows," illustrated civilians" dedication to war, the authors had different styles. In the poem, "Three Hundred Thousand More," you could see the Romantic and emotional view towards the war. James Sloan Gibbons, wanted to express how important the war was to the people, and how dedicated they were to it. "Driving Home The Cows," on the other hand, had a more Realistic view to the Civil War. Kate Putman Osgood wanted to show a more realistic view on Civil War, from a families" experience. .
In 1862, was a year with a lack of soldiers in the Union army, though there was a call of 500,000 volunteers the year before. So, that year Abraham Lincoln made another call of 300,000 men more. The reaction to this call was not great, since people expected the war to end long before. People didn't want to volunteer to this call, and they were getting disappointed that the war is still not over. James Sloan Gibbons, on the other hand, wrote this inspiring, patriotic poem, "Three Hundred Thousand More," in the response to the call. The emotions that Gibbons had inside can clearly be seen from this writing. First of all, the poem is extremely patriotic. He wrote how people are leaving everything behind, and going long distances to help. In this particular line, "We leave our plows and workshops, our wives and children dear," he brings the idea that people are sacrificing their possession and family, for the sake of the nation. Also the lines like, "We dare not look behind us, but steadfastly before," bring the feeling of patriotism. The feelings and emotions were most significant in Gibbons" poem. Although in real life the Union had extremely hard time getting the 300,000 volunteers, Gibbons wrote the poem full of devotion to the Union. His most likely intention to write this poem was to inspire the people to go to the war. Thus, Gibbons could not write the poem from realistic point of view, instead he did it very romantic.
