Some solutions for the lack of low income housing are: lower rents in more desirable housing or better maintenance for those houses with low rents, and a time limit for families in the homes so that other less fortunate people can have a chance to move in and change their lives for the better. Use of the government can also help:.
"Using federal and state funds as well as their own, local governments can set up public shelters, provide vouchers into hotels, and make food, equipment, and technical assistance available. The preferred pattern is to channel public funds to nonprofit groups for shelter and longer-term accommodations. Variations of this arrangement include setting up shelter trust funds for use by nonprofit agencies and selling city-owned houses, for $1 or so, to nonprofit groups, who turn them into dwellings for the homeless."" .
Rents are being raised, fewer low-income homes are being constructed, while old ones are being torn down, and the standards to get in to a low-income home have risen. Eliminating these problems will really help the homelessness situation in Canada. The concept behind having low-income housing is to get these people into homes. Another solution to decrease homelessness is increasing the number of jobs in the economy. More major centres need to be built, with more job opportunities. Money is everything, and the only way a homeless person can get off the streets and out of shelters is with steady employment, resulting in income. If the government can somehow find a way to increase the number of jobs and give people the training they need to get started, homelessness can again be decreased by a substantial amount. A third possible solution is to get more funding for the welfare system, and make it more accessible for those people who need it. In the last few years welfare funding has been cut and because of this homelessness has gotten worse.
