Contrasting stacy and tj

To contrast is to show differences when compared, from Webster's Dictionary. Two characters with significantly different personalities in Mildred Taylor's novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry are Stacey Logan and TJ Avery. The differences they exhibit are honesty, commonsense, and bravery. The first way the two boys differ is in terms of being honest.
First, Stacey and TJ both have different ideas of honesty. For example, Stacey tells his mother the truth about going to the Wallace Store because he knows he should not have been there in the first place. Secondly, he tells Jeremy Simms that Papa does not want them to be friends; by doing this he is getting out the truth instead of leading him on any further. Also, TJ cheats on the test and lies about it, getting Stacey in trouble for his actions. Lastly, TJ lies to Stacey and tells him that he looks like "a fat preacher" in his new coat. He manipulates Stacey into giving it to him. Although, both characters vary from truthfulness they also do not have the same commonsense.
Next, Stacey's intelligence is much greater than TJ's. First, Stacey studies for the big test because he knows it is going to be hard. Another example is Stacey thinks up a brilliant plan for revenge against the white children's bus. He digs a hole in the road to get the bus stuck so that it will not be able to drive by and splash his siblings. Next, TJ believes that RW and Melvin are actually his friends. He does not see how they manipulate him and use him for what they want. Also, TJ cheats on the test and thinks that he is going to get away with it when in fact he does not. Even though Stacey and TJ may not have the same logic they also do not show the same amount of courage. .
Finally, Stacey reveals bravery, whereas TJ does not. For instance, Stacey takes the whipping for TJ when he cheated. He knows he did not do it but takes the blame and stands alone for the punishment.
