Goodnight Mr Tom was written by Michelle Magorian. The book is set in the Second World War, and concerns a boy called William Beech. William is an evacuee from London who is sent to the countryside to live with a man called Tom Oakley, an elderly man in his early 70's.'.
Although Mr Tom has a dog, he is not used to having children round his house since his wife and son passed away a couple of years ago.
He is very angry when he is told that he has to take in a refugee, but he has to because William has nowhere else to go. Gradually William makes friends with the local children and they all become very close.
But then William has to go back to the city because his mother is ill. It seems that when William gets onto the train to take him back to London, they might never meet again.
But when weeks go by and Tom havnt heard a word from William he decides to go to London and look for him.
Willies mother reckons almost everything is a sin, eventho she strangely finds it alright to tie her son up and leave him to starve to death in a closet. And he would have done so unless mr tom showed up in the last second and saved him.
He takes willie back to the countryside and adopts him as willies mother recently have comitted suicide and he has no other family except for Mr tom.
Oon the whole I think that Goodnight Mr Tom is a really good book. It is a very enjoyable book to read with surprises page after page. In the whole I would give this book 8/10.
