Do you know the meaning of civilization? Is it important? Is it needed? Civilization means a society that has a high level of culture and social organization. In the story Lord of the Flies by William Golding, group of boys were stranded in an island without civilization. The story shows there are no rules, no laws, no authorities, and their parents are not around to discipline them. Contrary to the belief that man is innocent and society evil, the story shows that laws and rules, policemen and schools are necessary to keep the darker side of human nature in the line. Ignoring those elements can release the primitive part of a person. The boys are doing things by them selves and no one is guiding them to know what is right and what is wrong. Leaving duties to them selves alone can lead to trouble. The power grabbing that Jack did to Ralph is a result of the lost of civilization. Democracy is not present in the island. You still need the conch to be able to speak your thoughts. When they chose Ralph as their sole leader, there were no elections and they did not consider the thoughts of other boys who are also lost at the island. Like in the movie "Cast Away- starring Tom Hanks, the ball branded Wilson became his imaginary friend and it is because he needs someone to talk with to tell his feelings and by that simple ball he could unleash his feelings and thoughts because there were no civilizations around. Losing something important like civilization can hurt our human nature so much that we can almost do things that we did not imagine even in our dreams we could do. Like Jack, he became a master hunter and later in the movie he ended up hunting Ralph to become the sole leader of the group. Having no rules can be fun sometimes but sometimes doing things without can be a lot harder because we would not no the proper things to do. Like when playing a game a game without guidelines and rules would be boring or uninteresting to play.
