Theorizing the Postmodern Nuamann Family

Aaron had been accepted in Saul's study to play guitar and study with his dad for most of his adolescence. However, as soon as Saul saw something interesting and intelligent about Eliza that he could use, he switched his attention her, no longer participating in any activities with Aaron. Once Aaron realized that he was apparently no longer regarded as worth while by his dad he starts attending the ISKCON temple. He sneaks out on weekends and week days with lies about going to movies with friends and a camping trip to pursue his knew faith. Once he reveals his new way of living to his family, his father asks that he put his new faith aside. He ignores his fathers request to give it up and be with the family, and continues with his worship. Though at this point the Naumann family was already falling apart, Aaron would not see past what he was going through for the sake of Eliza, Saul and Miriam (Elkind 1994). Also, Saul's and Aaron's relationship throughout Aaron's adolescence was mutual authority. However, Aaron finds the ISKCON temple to fill the gap that his dad left. Another reason Aaron does not accept Saul's negative reaction to his faith is because of their past use of mutual authority. Aaron " will not accept a conversion to unilateral authority" (Goldberg, 2000 p.62) from his father. This a problem that many postmodern parents are having, because they were friends with their children at a earlier age, the children will not listen to their parents once they start trying to tell them what they can, and cannot do (Elkind).
Eliza had been ignored for most of her life in the family, her mother was to preoccupied with her own thoughts, and her father and brother were to intertwined with each other. Since she proved to be an average student in class the whole family was amazed and surprised with her ability to spell. As soon as her father took her under his wing she embraced his attention, even though she was well aware of his new rejection of Aaron.
