Themes in the Invisible Man


This shows that there is not only racism towards blacks in The Invisible Man, but also toward whites. .
             Because of all the stereotypes and prejudices in the novel, people never really see the true character behind the invisible man. He may be called the invisible man because his color has such an effect on his life, when he is with black people and with white people, that he becomes' invisible, to be indifferent to the racism. Although he is a black man, he feels invisible because people don't ever really look at him. Throughout the entire novel the reader never becomes aware of the true name of the invisible man. It is almost as if he is a voice. The narrator visits many different places in the novel and not only do the details about the places remain unknown but his name remains anonymous. This anonymity stresses his title as the invisible man. .
             Throughout the beginning of the novel the narrator is very nave, yet still intelligent. He is very respectful of his authority and never goes against the rules. The invisible man tends to often to look over the bad in people and only see the good. Yet as the story progresses and he has more life experience he has a more realistic outlook on life. Through his experiences in college, work, and political organizations he becomes confronted with reality. During his time in college he sees the black president do anything that the white founders of the school want him to do, and by doing this the president betrays many blacks. While working in the factory he gets beat up by other black people because they think that he turned on them. And while in his political organization he feels deceived by his people. Because of all these occurrences the narrator calls himself the invisible man, because he wants to become invisible to everyone around him. .
             In the novel, there are two objects that symbolize stereotypes which people have about black people. The first object is the coin bank, which is shaped like a grinning black slave.
