Indepence of Elders

The population of Americans ages 85 and older is expected to quadruple to almost 18 million (Guralnik, Alecxih, Branch, Wiener, 2001). The elderly population is at risk for debilitating chronic and long-term diseases. This presents society with enormous economic and social costs, resulting from attempting to provide care for these individuals. Research by Guralnik has shown that the majority of the costs for the elders result from loss of independence. They found that the United States currently spends more than $26 billion annually in additional health care costs for persons over 65 who lose their ability to live independently (Guralnik, et. al. 2001). This cost is projected to escalate in years to come. This realization makes it imperative that the disciplines of medicine, nursing and social work assist the elders in remaining independent.
Assisting this population in reaching this goal must include research findings that co-relate to factors that lead to loss of independence. The Alliance for Aging Research has designated a list of these factors including: .
Visual impairments such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
Dementia and mental impairment to include any entity that produces loss of cognitive or intellectual function.
Mobility impairment such as arthritis or osteoporosis.
Incontinence, which may be due to any number of causes.
             Hearing loss.
Recognition and early diagnosis of impairments may lead to effective treatment for these individuals and can assist them to remain in the community setting (Reuben, Walsh, Moore, Damesyn, Greendale 1998). .
Nursing professionals need to position themselves to be aware of possible barriers to effective treatment modalities and interventions. Recent research has shown that many primary care physicians or medical groups do not often refer elders to specialists. Managed care requires the primary care physician to make referrals for patients who need them.
