Drug Assisted Date Rapes

             The article I chose was "Drug-Assisted Date Rapes on Rise, Hard to Prosecute. In this article it explains how when I victim is enhanced with the date rape drug they often don't know that they are under the influence. When the powder, which is does not smell or taste, is mixed into a drink in a few minutes the victim will lose all consciousness. In this article it also says how after the victim has been raped they aren't really sure what went on, the after affects of this drug is just a headache and they only have a small idea of what went on. The victim can go to the hospital to get a physical done to see if they got raped or not. A lot of the time victims cannot remember what happened prior to the blackout, "Often times the only behavior they can recall is very innocent," said prosecutor Richard Monroy. The majority of rapes that have occurred in the United States have involved some type of drug to distort the victims mind. "Rape statistics have been going up, not down," said District Attorney Paul Pfingst". In certain cases there has been evidence like film of the rape. It is hard to win these cases in court because the woman is not 100 percent sure on what happened and it's the word of the defendant against what she remembers.
             I thought that this article was a very good one. When I started to work on this paper I didn't know much about date rape, only that it was a type of powdered drug. Now after reading the article I know that it is really effective and can cause the body a lot of harm. Knowing that the rape statistics have been increasing instead of decreasing is not good either. I think that people should try to be more cautious with their drinks and be careful around people when they are out in public areas. This is a very good article to use for my paper and I have learned a lot from it.
