The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jake and Dinos Chapman are two of the most talked about young British artists of their generation. Their sculptures often only allow adult viewings. By studying "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and some of their other most famous work, I can see that their ideas contain gruesome, extreme gore and disfigured human bodies, which are cleverly worked together with humour, wit and pleasure. I believe that this is a typical Jake and Dinos Chapman composition, and I am sure that the brothers are using black humour to force us to confront the nastier things in life and question what we really value about art and culture. .
When I first looked at this picture it struck me as tortured, deathly and unhappy. As I started to analyse I felt that this picture expresses the tragic effect on society following the terrorist's attack on America on 11th September 2001, since which there has been violence and bloodshed in various parts of the world including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002 and 2003. It shows us that time never stops and the world keeps on turning no matter how devastating events can be. The picture illustrates the Christmas season, which is a time for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, sharing your love and joy with your family and close friends. However, it also reminds us of the time when innocent people were being killed so easily due to war. I think that the masks could symbolise George Bush and Tony Blair as they are always pictured in cartoons and drawings with particularly large ears and mouths or, they could be communicating the process of the death which took many lives in 2003 which is; captured and tied, tortured, and then murdered with dissected bodies.
As I look closer I can see that it is flooded with colours of contemporary Christmas, and the male human bodies are almost disguised as they are wrapped in decorations consisting of baubles, lights, candles, and snow.
