Candide's Utopia

"" But the old man explains how they are grateful to God for providing all necessities for them to survive and prosper. They do not need to ask for more by praying. Their religion is very straightforward and practiced through a natural sense; humans do not create man-made rules to define and control the Eldoradons' lives. The villagers only hope for God, their main authority, to watch over them and their town. Rather than suggesting that there is a lack or order due to no authoritative rule, the old man acknowledges that everyone in the town are "priests."" Everyone has personal control over their faiths. There are no people of higher status that govern how the citizens must practice their religion. Even the kings do not exercise power over the town's religion. Instead they blend color into the practice by singing hymns every morning and offering orchestras to accompany the daily celebrations. Because the town does not have religious command, the townsfolk do not know what is meant when referring to monks. The old man feels it foolish for monks to exercise force and power over the religion a society follows. Candide is impressed to find out that Eldorado consists of such religious tolerance that lacks tyranny and violence. The calm and serene nature of Eldorado's religion contributes to his idea of a Utopian society.
             The absence of religious persecution in Eldorado fascinates Candide, but so does its unusual social system. The grounds of Eldorado are covered in precious stones such as "emeralds or rubies- that the school children use as their toys and discard as if they are ordinary rocks. Since Eldorado is so abundant with these riches they have become equivalent to the gravel on the roads. The lack of monetary value has prevented the people of Eldorado from becoming corrupt with notions of greed and pomp.
