Have you ever heard the term schizophrenia? Well did you really know what it was?. Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder that causes chronic mental health and cognitive development problems. Often disabling and sometimes profoundly affecting all aspects of a person life, interfering with a persons ability to interact with people, management or control of emotions, and the ability to think clearly. Occurs in 1% or one out of every 100 people, you may start to see signs throughout adolescence or in early adulthood. Signs of schizophrenia may appear gradually or all at once, unfortunately if they come gradually it is harder to fight this disease when it is finally found.
Although the cause of schizophrenia is unknown, researchers believe that you have a higher risk if; it passed down through family, other family members have a disease like schizophrenia, being born in the winter, complications or brain injury during birth, being exposed to viral infections during pregnancy, or a substance abuse problem. Those people who develop symptoms slowly, don't receive treatment, misuse drugs and alcohol, live in industrialized countries, are male, live in social isolation, or have poor family support, may be at greater risks for recurring relapses or a poor prognosis.
Schizophrenia has two types of symptoms: negative and positive. The negative symptoms include; self neglect, abnormal emotions, and lack of motivation. Often being difficult to treat, negative symptoms do not respond well to medications. The second type of symptoms is known as positive, including; hallucinations, disorganized behavior, inappropriate emotions, and delusions. It has been found that some people with schizophrenia have unusual characteristics that are believed to be symptoms of the illness or other conditions that develop with schizophrenia.
There are three stage of symptoms: prodromal, active, and residual.
